Mr Barry Levarde (Deceased)

Darwin NT Australia

Barry was well known in the Darwin area.
I believed he had a Targa, hand built Leyland Trayback Ute and attended many events in the 1980-90.

How to build the Leyden

How to build the Leyden

The end of the "Leyden trayback"

From: Barry Levarde
To: Adrian
Hi Adrian,
No.... the Leyden was purchased by a "Gunna", ended up rusting away and finally went to the tip..
I am not too distressed as I built it as a challenge....
drove it twice Darwin/Stdney and the idea worked very well.
However, it was not what was originally planned... the original was more complicated.
I planned to use the rear part of the HG, HQ Holden ute, replace the side skins with P76 outers and make the ute tailgate from a Holden with outer skin from the Leyland boot lid.
The ute back is still in my shed.
Because it was a mixture of Holden & Leyland.... Leyland front, HG Holden rear...
I used the Leyland boot letters and coined the name LEY DEN...
The bullbar was welded up from steel amd exhaust pipe with Leyland front bumper bar corners welded on.
I will, sort out any pisc I have left and send them.
Cheers,
Baz.

Barry's comments about Trax Model

Re the furore over the Trax models, not having seen or purchased one, may I put in my two cents worth. Having noted the several e-mails and comments on the Trax model it was not suprising that the model Morris Minor two door convertibles - one with hood up and the other with hood down and even two suitcases on the back seat - caught my attention. On studying them I found the detail not great but quite satisfactory down to the wipers moulded in the screen in silver. Paint finish was glossy and colours looked good. I then found that if you put them on the floor and pulled them backwards a couple of inches and released them, they would charge off under power from a simple spring motor. Where were they made? Why China of course!

And the price? A whopping $9.95 each at our local service station!
Cheers,
Baz,
