Problem with reverse lights

Question

Tue, 21 Oct 2003

A rather strange thing is happening to my Bitter Apricott deluxe lately.
When i put it into reverse (it is an auto if it helps at all) my left indicator comes on.
It does not flash and I am not sure whether it comes on outside.
It is just a little odd at night when the little green light comes on in reverse.
Just wondering if other people have had the same or similar thing happen.

Sounds a bit like an earth problem or maybe the reversing switch is shorting out. Cheers Bill. wm@pnc.com.au

Check earth conections in the boot, also damaged wiring.
The reverse and rear indicators share the same bulb.
Double 32 candle power bulb, if there is a crook conection rusty contact or the three wires are conected to the bulb socket wrong.
If you put a single filement bulb normaly all the indicators light up.

As Stuart Brown suggests, it's always a good idea to be certain of your earth connections, that they actually connect properly. Poor earthing is something that is more prevalent in older cars. Be sure that the left hand indicator/reversing light is securely earthed. If it isn't, the voltage must find another route to earth, and it can do that via the other filament in the same globe because they have a common earth. The other filament, of course, is the indicator circuit, which has earths in other parts of the car. So your indicators light up. Good luck. Mike Chadwick.

The incorrect globe is fitted to the L/H rear indicator.
It has had a 21w globe fitted with one contact on it.
This is connecting the two terminals in the globe holder together.
One is indicator the other is reverse.
You need the correct globe which is a 21/21 w globe this part is still
available from repco.

Hi Adam,
Try the earth wires at the left rear indicator. If the wires are loose, the power from the reverse light will flow through the indicator circuit as you describe.
This is a common problem, and should be checked every so often.
The wires are black and are screwed to the body by the lamp retaining philips head screws.
Jilden.
