WHEELS CAR OF THE DECADE FROM EAGLEHAWKFrom Mick Clark Victoria.Chris Bain sent me this recently, as Chris says he fell honored that his car has been chosen to represent the full production of 18,000 Leyland P'76's and its a tribute to the way he has restored and maintained his car. What's the odds of the 'P' winning the car of the decade .... I may be biased but it would be a miscarriage of justice if it didn't! MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE USE13 NOVEMBER 2002WHEELS CAR OF THE DECADE FROM EAGLEHAWKIf you passed Chris Bain driving his Leyland P76 V8, you may not have expected this car could be in contention for the Wheels Car of the Year Award. Commemorating the 40th anniversary of Wheels Car of the Year, Chris and his Leyland P76 V8 will travel to Melbourne representing the 1973 winner of Wheels Car of the Year, in a new award, the Wheels Car of the Decade. A car for each of the decades passed since the Award started will be announced. For Eaglehawk resident Chris the thrill of the competition is in the acknowledgement of the work he has placed into his car. "I couldn't believe my luck when I was invited to provide my Leyland P76 V8 as the representative for the 1973 winner. Each hour you spend restoring your car, you never ever expect to be invited to attend the best car competition in Australia", Chris said. "It won in 1973 and she's still running as well as ever, so I hope that the Leyland P76 V8 will take out the Car of the 1970s," he said. Chris is now busy putting the finishing touches to his Leyland P76 V8 prior to heading to Melbourne for the judging on Tuesday 26 November. Wheels editor, Ged Bulmer believes the competition is an excellent way to commemorate the cars that have laid the foundations towards the cars Australian's drive today. "The first Wheels Car of the Year was a Renault R8 and there has been so" fabulous cars win this award over the years. We're very grateful that Chris is bringing his Leyland P76 V8 to Melbourne for the 40th anniversary celebrations," said Ged. The Wheels Car of the Year started in 1963, when then editor of Wheels magazine Bill Tuckey wanted an award to acknowledge cars on the basis of engineering excellence, advanced design and value. "The Judging for Car of the Decade is based on these original criteria with the addition of significance to the decade specifically examined by the judges," said Ged. Wheels Car of the Year and Cars of the Decades will be announced at 11.00am on Tuesday 26th November at Federation Square, Melbourne.
