Weight of P76 V8 Engine

Question
- Hi,
- My name is Graham Hohnberg from Parkes NSW.
- I have been looking at the club site and was impressed with all that you have been doing .
- The tech tips are a great help, what i would like to know is how heavy is a complete P76 V8 .
- I have a fully reconditioned motor here [ it is an automatic with only flexplate fitted ] Exhaust manifolds are not used as it is going into a small aeroplane and I am useing a different set up cutting down on weight. The starter motor will be retained but not the alternator at this point, I will fit one but it will be mounted further back and be driven by a small shaft.
- The only other thing different is a Holley 350 carb [ standard modified inlet manifold ] and a full length gate baffled wet sump.
- If you or someone would be able to give me a rough weight of one of these engines it would help me out a lot .
- I have looked everywhere but have had no luck.
- The weight will be ok but it is better to know more about it so i can work out the rest of the plane centre of gravity etc. These little motors are great to work on and am impressed with how it has come together. It will be great to hear it running, it drives a 7' foot laminated propellor through a 1.67 : 1 Prop shaft reduction unit .
- Any help would be greatly appreciated .
- Kind regards
- Graham Hohnberg

Answer
- Hello Adrian.
- In reply to the message you sent me, I have looked up my workshop manual for the weights. The manual doesn't specify a weight for the motor on its own.
- However, the weight of the motor with an auto trans bolted to it is 199.5kg (467 lbs).
- It also mentions that the auto transmission on its own weighs 43.5 kg (leyland P76 workshop manual, page B15).
- It does not mention whether these weights include oil mass, I would assume that these weights are without oil.
- I feel that the ole leyland flies quick enough without the need for a prop and wings, but heh, I would prefer to fly if I could keep one foot on the ground.
- Regards
- George...
