Question about Pistons

Pistons for V8

Question

5 Jul 2005
Hi, Brad Davren here.
I was just rebuilding Targa II of IV and wanted some pistons.
Now as I said I have my own business so suppliers are no problem, but the suppliers I have do not sell them.
I was told that Holden pistons fit. Do you know which ones?
Or anyone who might.
Thank you, I'll be glad too keep you posted and it should be done in the comming months so I'll have too show it.
off.
Cheers
Brad

Pistons for the P76 V8 can be obtained via
Moe Engines (ask for Brian)
121 Moore Street
Moe
Vic 3825. tel. (03) 5126 1222
Pistons are available +0.020", +0.030", +0.040" oversize.
They have the recessed head, i.e. the combustion chamber shape is retained.
I have a set in my motor, and I have not had a cracked piston skirt since fitting. However, before engine assembly, I did relieve all the sharp edges with a bit of very fine wet-and-dry. It's worth the work.
Brian tells me that his supplier is Engine Warehouse, Brisbane; however, he tells me that they only supply engine rebuilders with the appropriate workshop facilities.
Brian also tells me that he doesn't recommend using 173 Holden pistons in the P76 V8 because the metalurgical properties are different, and it is a flat-top piston - i.e. the combustion chamber shape will be different
if fitted.
However, I used to have P76 with an engine that had these pistons in it, and it went quite well. I found that it went best with the std. Lucas distributor set at 2 degrees BTDC. The engine was a bit mechanically noisy, but reliable.
I hope this helps you in your rebuild.
