Engine Dyno test

[leylandp76] Dyno test - Reconditioned Engine

Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2006
I have (only) just completed a series of Engine Dyno tests on a reco P76 V8 destined for a 1989 Range Rover
The P76 engine was supplied by me and was built and tested by Fred James at “Dyno Kinetics” in Dandenong ( Melb 9791 2454 )
This motor has standard bore and pistons but has a (very) mild cam and uses the Rover heads , distributer , extractors and fuel injection system
As we couldn’t be bothered to remove / rewire the Rover computer to the Dyno , we used a after market “Autronic SM4” to control the fuel injection
In a Range Rover , you need to use the Rover heads as the accessories do not bolt to the P76 heads .
The slightly larger chambers on the Rover heads give an actual compression ratio of 8.4 to 1 and we used 24 degress total advance on the engine
Fred was not attempting to build a “performance” motor as the final customer wanted a basically standard engine
Much could be done to increase the output of this engine but it was interesting to run some tests on a basically stock engine with Rover injection.

Comparisons

150 hp = Rover 3.5 : carbs
160 hp = Rover 3.5 : hi comp with carbs
180 hp = Rover 3.9 : Injected
190 hp = Rover 4.0 : injected
225 hp = Rover 4.6 : injected
224 hp = Leyland 4.4 V8 with Rover injection etc
Not bad for a 30+ year old block design
Most impressive was the reasonably flat power curve and average hp of 173.9 and torque of 280 ftp
We ran the engine in on the dyno and then really let loose on it , with one “run” having the exhausts glowing red hot
I captured the dyno runs on video and I am compiling it into a 10 min clip (80% done) . We turned the lights off on the run with the red hot exhausts and it looks great on the video
I have sent a separate post with some photos and I will let you know when the video clip is available
Enjoy
Rick
